An editorial shoot can be a commercial shoot but a commercial shoot cannot be an editorial shoot.

Commercial shoot:

A commercial shoot is a shoot put together for, and potentially by, a brand to create content for their marketing purposes. The content created can be used on their website, social media, catalogs, and more.

Editorial shoot:

An editorial shoot is a shoot put together to tell a story, create a concept, flexing your creative muscles or get published.

Who puts them on?

Commercial shoot

A commercial shoot is put on by a brand or a marketing/public relations company.

Editorial shoot:

An editorial shoot is put on by a creative director or a photographer.

How can they be interchangeable?

An editorial shoot is specifically made in order to be published and a commercial shoot may be planned in order to sell a product or service in a publication.
